AGE-SPECIFIC MODULES AVAILABLE
by Larry Rocha posted 7/30/2017

AGE-SPECIFIC MODULES are now up and running. Age-Specific Modules must be completed before a coach can be placed on a roster. Coach must complete the age-specific module for each age group they are coaching. If the coach has already completed the module for the group they are coaching they do not need to do the module again.

8 Year Old's Skill Set
by Larry Rocha posted 7/10/2017

This 8 year old has a solid skill set.  It will be interesting to see how this skill set will translate into playing the game when the 8 year old gets older.

NEWS from the USA HOCKEY ANNUAL CONGRESS
by Larry Rocha posted 6/15/2017
  • Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 Clinics will be $45 this year.
  • USA Hockey is moving to a new browser for coaches to register for clinics.  This browser is not ready at the moment but should be available soon.  Keep checking to see when you can register for a clinic.
  • LEGISLATIVE PROPOSAL (PASTED):  All coaches must have the required certification level by January 1 of the current season, unless earlier deadlines are established by the district and/or affiliate.  All coaches must complete the on-line age-specific modules PRIOR to participating with their team.
    • The type in red is new wording.  The deadlines part was basically to clean up wording in the Annual Guide to let districts and Affiliates have earlier dates for things like split season teams.  The part on the Age-Specific Modules basically means a coach cannot be put on a roster until he/she completes the age appropriate module.
  • MAIN RULE CHANGES (note rule changes are every 4 years … this year was a rule change year.  These changes will be in effect for the 2017-2018 season and for the next four years):
    • ICING:  Icing while on the PK will not be whistled for Adults (male and female), High School and Youth/Girl’s 16U and above only).  What this means is that if in a game a player (14U and below) ices the puck while killing a penalty icing will be called and there will be a face-off in the offending teams defensive zone.  This is an attempt to develop skills and puck possession.  This rule PASTED.
    • OFF-SIDES:  The rule was to have automatic off-sides be moved up to the 14U level and below.  So, the tag up rule would start at 16U.  Again, this was an attempt to develop skills and puck possession.  This rule was DEFEATED.
    • All faceoffs will occur at one of the nine faceoff dots.

Body Checking Study in Youth Hockey in Canada
by Larry Rocha posted 7/29/2016

Study of the Body Checking in Youth Hockey in Canada helps support USA Hockey's change in the age group (14U) when Body Checking is allowed.  It is the coaches responsibility at the 12U age group to teach body checking (both giving and receiving) so the players are prepared at the 14U level.
